Celtic looked to find their first win on German soil in 14 previous games. Borussia Dortmund brought Celtic back down to Earth after their opening 5-1 win against Slovakian side Slovan Bratislava. Adeyemi scored an inspiring first half hat-trick to quick snub Celtic’s hopes making Glasgow side the first British team to concede five goals in the first half of a European game in 27 years. Managers Nuri Sahin and Brendan Rogers were reunited again at the Signal Iduna Park after Sahin’s brief loan move to Anfield in 2012.
BVB were awarded an early penalty for a careless challenge by Schmeichel who saw yellow with no complaints, and was converted by E. Can. Celtic quickly levelled the score with a Maeda equaliser from an Engels cross into the box.
Engels looked for the gaps previously seen in the German side’s defence after they conceded five at Stuttgart and had to come back from Bochum’s 2-0 lead against them on Friday.
Dortmund did not take long to respond back with a brutal Adeyemi hat-trick and another penalty, converted by striker Guirassy, for a very soft challenge on Adeyemi.
The two converted penalties and Adeyemi hat-trick left Dortmund with a 5-1 lead at half time.
After the break, triple goalscorer Adeyemi, shuffles off the pitch with an injury to the relief of the Celtic defence that was torn apart by Dortmund striker. Duranville comes on as Adeyemi’s replacement.
Celtic try to salvage some pride with a Kuhn attack, finished by a weak shot at the keeper. More disappointment for the visiting support.
Dortmund make a triple substitution, bringing off Brandt, Groß and Couto for Beier, Nmecha and Bensebaini.
Celtic reply with two attackers to try close the goal difference by bringing on Furuhashi and Kuhn for Idah and Hyun-jun.
Celtic defender Johnston plays out a poor pass, taken advantage of by Guirassy who slips the ball past Celtic’s keeper making it 6-1.
Guirassy is taken off for Sabitzer. With this lead it is likely that Dortmund manager Sahin is resting his players for their clash away against Real Madrid next in the competition.
Idah looks to pull one back for Celtic but his header lands in goalkeeper Kobel’s gloves. Another chance for Idah as he misses an easy opportunity on goal.
Schmeichel watches as Nmecha drives the ball into the back of his net making it seven goals for the home team.
Embarrasment for Celtic as the whistle blows, moving from third to nineteenth in the Champions League table. A poor performance from the Scottish team who will need to change their style of play to have any hopes of staying in this competition.
For the home side it was a different story. Dortmund will be feeling hopeful ahead of their game against Real Madrid in a rerun of last season’s final. Celtic were lucky that Dortmund didn't put more goals past Schmiechel, with the BVB firing 14 shots on target in this one-sided match.
