GOTG X LFC Women at Anfield.

It was a special day for over 200 young women from the wellness club Girls on the Go Liverpool on Saturday. The club partnered with LFC Women to bring the girls to Anfield for an exhilarating Women’s Super League clash against Manchester City. The women’s group, which focuses on promoting health, wellness, and friendship, has an overarching goal: to make the UK a less lonely place for girls.

The experience at Anfield was unforgettable, as the Girls on the go—positioned in the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand—witnessed a historic moment for the Women’s team. Though their group made up only a small fraction of the approximate 18,000 fans in attendance, their presence added energy and excitement to the crowd with most of the attendees for the group sporting their colours.

The match itself was thrilling, with Liverpool’s debut goal at Anfield arriving just before the half-time whistle. This marked a significant moment, as the team’s regular home ground is St Helens Stadium and had never scored at Anfield before. The Reds’ joy was short-lived, however, as their goal scorer was forced to leave the pitch due to injury. Smith was replaced by England U-19 forward Enderby who was passionately cheered onto the pitch by the home support.

Despite their first-half lead, Liverpool Women’s dream of glory was overshadowed by Manchester City’s Shaw. After the break, Shaw found the equaliser, levelling the score. As the game wore on, it seemed destined for a draw—until Shaw scored again in injury time, sealing a 2-1 victory for Manchester City Women.

The result puts Manchester City Women top of the WSL, with their London rivals Chelsea, close behind in second. Five time consecutive WSL champions Chelsea and Manchester United both have a game in hand over the current leaders and there is all to play for. For the Merseyside team, however, it was disappointment leaving this game-week sitting four points behind Brighton Women in fifth.

Though the result wasn’t what the Liverpool faithful had hoped for, the day remained a memorable one for the Girls on the Go Liverpool attendees. For the club’s members, it was an unforgettable day out in the Anfield atmosphere.
