Sheffield United's late 2-1 victory over 10-man Bristol City last night sent a shockwave of excitement through Ashton Gate, as the Blades moved to within a single point of the top of the Championship table behind Sunderland. Chris Wilder’s side found their rhythm at the end of the second half to walk away with the all important three points.
United were struck with a two point deduction in the league breaching profitability and sustainability, but despite this setback have put in a solid performance in their 14 games as of yet. The Owls have only lost twice this season and look to be on track to securing a play-off position. With all other teams in the top 6 bar Watford, having a game in hand over the Blades - Sheffield United will not be feeling too cocky about their position in the very close league.
Bristol City, who currently sit in 11th position, have had a less successful run this season walking away with just a point from most league games and only winning four games. Coach Liam Manning stayed hopeful for the club saying there were ‘so many positives’ from the match.
H. Burrows scores the winning goal against Bristol City
Limited action in the first half brought a cascade of substitutions for Sheffield United after the break, but it was City that took the edge. Cooper pulled Armstrong down in the box to give away a penalty in the 75th minute. Mehmeti converted it to give City the lead.
18 year-old striker Ryan One, who was brought on minutes before the penalty, found the back of the net to make the game level in the 86th minute.
With the game entering injury time, it looked sure to end a draw but Dickie was handed a straight red and sent walking for toppling O’Hare 35 yards out.
With only minutes left before the whistle, the excitement of the game was sure to be over - but no. Burrows beat O’Leary on the left of the box and wins the game for United.
